Blog #2

It is an old saying that actions speak louder than words.  The attached video starring Danny Glover is nothing more than actions.  Your task is to give words to the meaning of the actions by answering the following questions.

1.) What message is the film maker trying to convey?

2.) Why do you think the homeless man follows the business woman at the end of the video?

3.) What, if any, is the significance of the red kite?

**By Friday, August 12th, respond to the above questions and direct your response to me.  Make sure to use an appropriate greeting and closing.

**By Sunday, August 14th, respond to what two of your classmates had to say about the video.  Make sure that you also use the appropriate greeting and closing to your post.

  2. Dear, Ms. Carlson

I believe that the message the film maker is trying to convey is that if we can work together as a community we can overcome our problems. I think the homeless man could be following the business woman for two reasons either he's trying to ask her for money, or he wants to help her out. The red kite’s significance in the short was to show the random acts of kindness, that people do in the world.

    Sincerely,
    Spenser T.

  3. Dear Ms. Carlson,
I think that what the film maker is trying to convey is that as you said actions speak louder than words, and that we should even though were having a rough time that we should always try to make time to help others.I think the homeless man follows the business woman because she didnt help him so hes going to follow her and change her attitude, and get her to help other people. I also think that the red kite represents a oppurtunity or and open door for you to show your kindness, and help people.

  7. Dear Ms. Carlson,
I believe the film maker is trying to convey in this film is that an act of kindness goes a long way. I think the homeless man that follows the business woman at the end of the video to show her the same lesson that the business man received throughout the video. The red kite is what they call a motif. I think the motif of the red kite is to symbolize the random acts of kindness that happens every day.
    Sincerely,

I agree with the fact that you think that this film is about working together to over come problems. I too agree that the reason why the homeless man follows the business lady is because he wants her help, but I think that he’s also following the business lady to show her that a little act of kindness could benefit her in her life. I also agree with your thought of the red kite representing the random acts of kindness that people do all around the world.

  12. Dear Class,

I am still hung up on why that kite is red!! Granted, the film maker limits his font color choices to just red, black, and white, but I am wondering if there is anything symbolic to the color of red. Also, does anyone else notice who sets in motion the first act of kindness? What hidden message might be behind that?

    Sincerely,
    Ms. Carlson

  13. Dear Ms. Carlson,

To me, the film maker is trying to tell us that we should perform more acts of kindess towards each other. It also feels as if the director was trying to give the man a concience, he would have to stop and then think about things. The homeless man at the end of the show,to me portrayed the buisness womens concience, hes going to try and have her perform a nice deed. The red kite is like a symbol of kindness and when it should be shown or when you have actually accomplished that goal.

  14. Dear Ms. Carlson,

I believe that the message that the film maker is trying to convey is that actions do indeed speak louder than words. Even if we are having a not so good day, you should be considerate of your surroundings and try to do good for others. I also believe that he might be saying that good things will come to you in return if you help out. I think the homeless man follows the business girl to show the same message that the man in the beginning had. She walked right passed him with no politeness at all. I believe that the red kite is a motif and it shows that there are so many things you could do for people around you.

I think the message being passed around is that the way our actions are can lead to be greater then what we speak. I think Tte homeless man in the ending follows the business lady because he may be able to learn by what the lady does. The red kite to me seems to be the action of kindness we do everyday.

I think the film maker is trying to say that even if you have a bad day, you should still act kind to others so they dont have a bad day also. I think the kite symbolizes acts of kindndess you should do to other people. The homeless man followed the women I think, since she didnt help the man, he was going to start another line and make the lady do acts of kindness.

In the video, i think the message is just like you said actions speak louder than words. Even if our day isn't going as smooth as we would want it to be, doesn't mean we take it out on others, we should always be open minded to others, and our community. Especially if the problem had nothing to do with anyone else, why should we take it out on them. The homeless man follows the business woman at the end of the video because, she needs to learn the same lesson the man did, which was to not be so closed minded. The red kite signifies random acts of kindness that you should do for others.

I think the film makers message is just like you said actions speak louder than words. If we see someone having a hard time we should help them. We should do that because maybe one day that person will be us in need and we would want someone to help us. In time something good will happen to you if you help someone. The homeless man following the business woman is a great example in to showing that we should be considerate of others and not only think about our self. The red kite stands as kindness and that is something we all should do once in our life.

  29. I think that the film maker is trying to say that there is a rhythm to life. I think the homeless man followed the lady to give that her some rhythm and the kite means that you should have some spirit in your life otherwise you become a stick in the mud.

  30. Dear Ms. Carlson,
I think the film maker is trying to convey that actions speaks louder than words. Also that doing little acts of kindness goes a long way. I think that the homeless man follows the business woman because just like the man, she was too busy to notice others around her so he may have figured he could change her attitude and perspective. I feel that the red kite symbolizes opportunities to help others and show kindness, so it may be passed on.

I think that this video is trying to prove that little things may mean a lot to others. Even if the man gave little money or even alot, it proves that he is a good person. I also think that this video is trying to say that actions speak louder than words. At first the man walked passed the little girl when her kite was stuck in a tree. But as timed passed he then picked up the kite and later gave the other man money. I believe that the kite symbolizes affection. At the end the lady walks pass the man without any acknowledgment and the kite goes on and follows her next.

  70. Dear Ms. Carlson,

I think the filmmaker is repeating the idea of "paying it forward". Once the man realized he had been ignoring the people around him, he contributed to the cause of getting other people to be aware of their surroundings as well. The filmmaker points out that we get lost in our own agendas therefore ignoring everything and everyone else, and we often forget just how important kindness can be. I believe that the homeless man follows the woman at the end of the video because the action signifies the continuation of the mission. When the drummer, pizza delivery boy, and mother etc. followed the businessman, he eventually noticed them. The homeless man is gearing toward the same outcome with the business woman at the end of the video. I believe that the red kite is a physical symbol representing kindness. Once the original man was changed for the better he passed it on to the homeless man to give to the business woman, hoping for the same effect.

  83. Dear Ms. Carlson,
This video was very inspiring for me. At the beginning, the man was so wrapped up in his own problems that he didn't notice what was going on around him. But everyone has problems. I think the filmmaker had the people he passed follow him around to get him to realize his impact on the world. Later, he saw the red kite and really thought about all the opportunity he had to be kind, and yet passed it up. When he saw the homeless man, he now saw oppotunity clearly and passed on the kindness. I also believe he saw some of himself in the homeless man, and thought that he could be in that situation also. The homeless man then follows the business woman at the end of the video, because he sees what was in the man who helped him, and would like her to realized the missed opportunities she will most likely have. Lastly, the red kite. I think the color red was used for the kite, because it sparks emotion in whoever sees it, and can be perceived in many ways.

  87. Dear Ms. Carlson,
I believe that the message being conveyed is that even when you have one bad day you can make yourself feel better by helping others who may have worse days everyday of their lives. You can at least be at ease knowing you made others happier. Good karma will come back to you when you give out of kindness. I think the homeless guy wants to follow the woman and help her to help others and not be stingy or selfish or ignorant. When he follows her others will foloow her and she will have some sort of epiphany. I think the red kite resembles liitle efforts of kindness.
    Sincerely,
    Kaleilani Perry

i think that the film maker is trying to convey that actions prove towards of who you are and words sometimes dont mean aa thing unless you prove it with your actions.

i agree with your statement that your day may not have start with how you want it to but with a little act of kindness or a polite look of attitude, it just may brighten up your day or like you said, it just may turn everything around.

    Sincerely,

  92. Dear Ke'ala,
I was thinking the exact same thing when the business man looked at the homeless man and saw himself. It must have been a wake-up call that that could have been him sitting there holding out a tin can.
    Sincerely,
    Gianne Pabustan

    Dear Jeiel,
It really doesn't take too much time away from your day to go out help someone that you pass by. You could help an old lady cross the street or help that single mom get that stroller down the steps.
    Sincerley,
    Gianne Pabustan

  93. Dear Lisetanne,
I'm really glad you mentioned the point about "paying it forward", because I think it describes the message of the video completely. He was so caught up he didnt notice, but once he did, look how many people he could affect.
    Sincerely,
    Ke'ala Lopez

    Dear Adarah,
I completely agree with what you said about being close-minded. Many people are so cught up in their own life, they fail to see their surroundings because it may not affect them personally.
    Sincerely,
    Ke'ala Lopez

I think that even though there is no speech in this video the meassage is clearly stated. People need to care for other people. Even though they do not know them presonally they should have a compassionate heart. At the end it showed him as a homeless man in poverty. And no one even acknowledged him. This made me sad.

  97. Dear Ms.Carlson,
I think that this movie was trying to show that actions speaks way louder then your words do. Also that helping people in need is going to give you something better in return. At the end they showed him as a homeless man because it shows that people need to appreciate what they have and give thanks for it.
