The Lost Generation
By Kiersten W., Mason, OH
Oh why have we settled in the unquiet darkness,
where the noise of the silence overwhelms our hearts?
And we fall apart –
the sun sets and it rises –
we make shapes of ourselves no one can see.
Oh why are we lost in these tears
if we’ve forgotten how to cry?
If absence makes the heart grow fonder
can we hold on much longer?
We are burning in a drought of faith,
unnoticing as the stars are earnestly shining,
desperately bleeding light.
Oh how ironically hopeless
is every star’s forgotten fight,
for we are just uselessly drowning
under the weight,
under the honesty of the unspoken.
Oh the noise of the silence overwhelms our hearts.
I believe we are skillfully crafted
inexplicable accidents,
and our hero– the potter –
is too late.
where the noise of the silence overwhelms our hearts?
And we fall apart –
the sun sets and it rises –
we make shapes of ourselves no one can see.
Oh why are we lost in these tears
if we’ve forgotten how to cry?
If absence makes the heart grow fonder
can we hold on much longer?
We are burning in a drought of faith,
unnoticing as the stars are earnestly shining,
desperately bleeding light.
Oh how ironically hopeless
is every star’s forgotten fight,
for we are just uselessly drowning
under the weight,
under the honesty of the unspoken.
Oh the noise of the silence overwhelms our hearts.
I believe we are skillfully crafted
inexplicable accidents,
and our hero– the potter –
is too late.
1.) When you read this poem, how did it make you feel? What words or phrases did the speaker say that triggered those emotions?
2.) Did you see any logic or reasoning behind why the poet feels that the "potter is too late?" And what connection might the poet be trying to make by using the title "The Lost Generation?"
3.) And for your own knowledge, the poet is a teen writer and I found the poem posted on an online teen journal. So, now that you know that the poem reflects someone from your generation, does the speaker of the poem give you more of a reason to reflect on their writing? If so, why? If not, then why not?
By answering and reflecting on the above questions, you are utilizing Aristotle's Rhetorical Triangle. Extra Credit: What do you think that Ethos, Logos, and Pathos means? You may Google the terms or just guess.
Dear Ms. Carlson,
ReplyDeleteWhen i read this poem it made me feel loneliness. I felt the feeling of carrying all the burdens of life by myself. The words that made me feel this way was "darkness" and "not being able to see good." I think it means like the hero or the speaker the one who will show us there is more to darkness and bad things, but that person is too late. I think "The Lost Generation" is being used as the connection that the generation is lost and has to start seeing the good and not living in darkness. The generation still has to find its way to the world around us and happiness. Yes now that I know the writer is from my generation it gives me more reason to reflect on it because the writer is talking about us and how we are or are going to be. Logos is the idea or message, Pathos is the force or emotion, and Ethos is the form or manner. Sincerely, Lawson Fernandes Pd.5
Dear ms. Carlson,
ReplyDeleteThis poem is sad. It makes me wanna cry and my heart begins to tear open and bleed out the sadness and tears by my lonesome self. "The Lost Generation" makes me feel alone in the darkness and i don't want to get out of the whole. This poem makes me feel like I am sinking in a deep dark whole of despair. And that i can't get out of it.
Sincerely,
Camile Gange Pd.2
Dear Lawson Fernandes,
ReplyDeleteI love the way you describe this poem it made me feel like that too. i just wanted to thank you for your input on this poem it really put things in perspective for me. once again i wanted to thanks you for your input and your wisdom that you wanted to share with everyone.
Sincerely,
Camile Gange Pd.2
Dear Camile Grange,
ReplyDeleteI like that you said it made you want to cry. I agree it had so much emotion in it. Also thanks for thanking me on my perspective it was really nice. Sincerely, Lawson Fernandes Pd 5.
Dear Ms Carlson,
ReplyDeleteKierstens' poem has really inspired me to write poems like these. It may be hard for some folks to understand but like you said, its really not a problem. You could write a poem thats hard to catch on but if you use such strong emotions they way Kiersten did, it will capture the readers mind and emotion. "What you write, is what you feel." What inspires me the most is that it was a teenage girl who wrote this. I mean, I could be writing stuff like this if i really put my mind to it. I learned from her poem that the more feeling you put into it the more you'll tend to flow with it and for that reason, it wont matter if you understand it or not. As lonf as it catches your attention with your emotions.
Sincerely, Jen
Dear ms.
ReplyDeleteThis poem was touching. Like for the while I was reading it it took me a few reads to Let the poem stick, and it stuck right in my heart. I saw him talking about so dark way of battling the changes and the heattbrakes of life. The way I took this poem was with a slight tear and wanting to see the one I love so badly. Life is critically to short to be WAISTING it.By saying that the potter is to late he may mean that your savior was to late to end the sadness and the pain. But I like the title. Maybe coulda added a few more details to put a generation in it but yeah.I will reflect on there writing but I feel like I could go deeper than that. I could out do him. I'm filled with so much hatred and sadness and instability at this point in my life that If we had an essay to talk about our worst memories or our fears or how we feel right now. I bet I could top 2,000 words. Maybe even 2500.
Ethos - An apeal based on the character of the author. Maybe strong or something.
Logos - Is intelligent, and driven.
Pathos - is the love. Or the one who has a heart. Emotional and compassionate. It's the author that empties his heart on paper.
Dear ms. Carlson
ReplyDeleteThis poem is about individuality to me. I feel like no one expresses it any more and it is also about acceptance. The author says “we make shapes of ourselves no one else can see.” Potters create pottery, just like god created the earth, or maybe just someone in power? It means the way things are so corrupt and can’t be fixed. That is why is it called the lost generation. It can’t be fixed because it’s hopeless. Ethos are based on character of the speaker, Logos are about reasoning and logic and Pathos are the emotions.
Sincerely lilia Yamamoto Pd5
Dear Camile,
ReplyDeleteI didn't think it was as touching as you did. but that's what I like about poems. It can effect people differently.

Dear jeni,
ReplyDeleteI replying to your post cause is first I seen and really caught my eye. Like it inspired me too. I see what your saying and thanks for sharing. This poem had so much emotion for a high school student. And you are a great writer! You could write something twice this.
Dear Jeni,
ReplyDeleteThat's cool you feel inspired to write something similar to this. I would like to read it.
sincerely Lilia Yamamoto p5
Dear Lilia Yamamoto,
ReplyDeleteI like that you said that you feel that the poem is about individuality. I also like that you said its about not feeling acceptance. I like that you put feeling into your response. Sincerely, Lawson Fernandes Pd 5.
Dear Ms. Carlson,
ReplyDeleteWhen I read this poem it made me feel pretty sad. Reading it made me feel like this poet gave up on certain things in life. The poet says,"Oh the noise of the silence overwhelms our hearts" and this to me means that the author is lonely most of the time and she/he can't handle moments like that. To me I personally never seen any logic behind the saying "the potter is to late." The poet called his/her poem "The Lost Generation" because she feels lost in the situation that she/he is in and she/he is in this certain generation. No its does not give me more of a reason to reflect on it because this poem is too sad for me to read.
Sincerely,

Dear Lilia Yamamoto,
ReplyDeleteYour response was the best one i saw. You said that this poem was about individuality. I like that you had took this poem deeper then it sounds. You had alot of feeling to what you said.

Dear Ms. Carlson,
ReplyDeleteWhen I read this poem it made me feel sad. It made me feel like the author wanted to end his life because he was in to much pressure and distress."We are burning in a drought of faith" the potter is to late to shape his life and turn it around. No, its doesn't because i think this poem is a bit to sensitive for me.
Sincerely,

when i read this poem it made me sad and feel like the person who wrote it is very sad. this poem is saying how he is lonely him the noise of the silence overwhelms our hearts, to me he is saying how when we are alone is when we tend to be so sad and upset. in this poem i understand why he would feel so sad and upset but he the things he is saying i think are a bit extreme and could be said and handled better. no i do not think it matters to me who wrote it because i think it is to over dramatic.

Dear Ms. Carlson,
ReplyDeleteWhen I read this poem it left me speechless. Though I feel like I understand what the author is saying, I don’t have any worlds to describe how I feel towards it. To me the poem holds no happiness or sadness, but holds something that most don’t see, the truth. This poem expresses exactly what this world/ generation has become. The poet feels that the potter is too late and I agree. Our world and all those who live in it are unable to help ourselves and so our hero-the potter- can’t either. The speaker does give me more to reflect on my writing. Although I wouldn’t want to write another poem, I will use the way this poet worded her feelings in my later works.
I think that ethos are things that people can relate to as a whole, or things that can be perceived with our five senses. Pathos are things that relates to what’s within your heart like emotions. Logos are things that are logical and most of the time have an exact answer. Basically these three things make up a poem, or so I think.
Sincerely,
Jaxey pd6
Dear Ms Carlson,
ReplyDeleteThe poem made me feel that my generation is doomed, especially when the author mentioned “under the honesty of the unspoken. Oh the noise of the silence overwhelms our hearts”, which means that everyone is afraid to stand up for what they really believe in and without saying anything can lead my generation of being doomed to have no sense of individuality what so ever. The logic I see behind “the Potter is too late” there are no intellectuals who like Potter who are willing to stand up and say what’s truly wrong with this world and our country. The title of “the Lost Generation” connects us to being lost to the truth since everyone these days with political correctness tries to hide the truth from us of what really happens in the world and says its all sunshine and lollipops when it isn’t. Since the poet is of my generation it does give me more of a reason to reflect on her writing because she’s actually someone of my generation who actually understands what’s going on in the world much like myself who tries to uncover the truth of our world.
Sincerely,
Spenser T.

Dear Lilia Yamamoto
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree with your statement that no one really expresses individuality any more since everyone is so tied up in cliques and unions trying to go with the crowd when they themselves don’t really want to. I even agree with the fact that the world is corrupt in everything that’s happening right now, like; the economy, and all the unnecessary conspiracies, etc. Although I found your interpretation of “the potter is too late” to be rather interesting, even though at first I thought it meant Harry Potter as a heroic figure, but oh well many people have different ways of seeing things .
Sincerely,
Spenser T.

Dear Ms. Carlson, I feel that this poem makes me depressed. It sets you in a glum mode and makes you feel sad. The first time i read it, I didn't really get it, but after I re-read it I began to understand what the author is trying to say, and I really liked it. I can relate to the meaning of it. I think the author meant by saying "The Potter is too Late", that You can't wait forever and by the time the potter comes, It's too late because you've already moved on. I think it's a universal meaning because people can relate to it in other ways. Knowing that a teen my age wrote this, makes me inspired to write my emotions and feelings out and try to better myself as a poet.
ReplyDeleteI think the term logo's mean more logical. It appeals more to the intellect and academic arguing. Ethos are all about being trustworthy. The audience is a lot more willing to listen because the speaker uses a lot more effective persuasive strategy.
Sincerely,
Kahalani Ta'a
Dear Jaxey,
ReplyDeleteWhen I read the poem I was definitely thinking the same thing that the poem was suppose to be telling the truth about our world. I do agree with the fact that no one doesn’t really want to do anything to help this world or are just unable to do it all together because of all the restrictions and fines with political correctness. However who says that our generation has to be doomed, maybe sometime in our later years we can hopefully do something to help this world after all.
Sincerely,
Spenser T.

Dear Spencer,
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you feel about our generation. Having everyone be too afraid to stand up and say what they truly believe in shows us how weak each of us are. We lost individuality and got lost in the world. I also agree with how lost we are because politics hide so much from us.
Sincerely,

Dear Ms. Carlson,
ReplyDeleteThis poem made me sad and it sounded like the author wanted to die. I don't know the logic behind the potter is to late, or the lost generation. This does not make me want to write more because it is to sad for me.

ReplyDeletei agree with your responce because the poem is way to sad which isnt a good thing to think about.
dear taylor ochoa
ReplyDeletei have to agree with your responce because the writter is a little to harsh on the sadness of the poem .also it is to very dramatic way to dramatic.
Dear Ms. Carlson,
ReplyDeleteTo me this poem is talking about the darkness in our hearts that are becoming overwhelmed and can no longer take the pressure. On the outside it may seem like were happy and is filled with light but on the inside there might not be any light at all, hence, no one can see it. Their probably waiting for someone to come and save them from this time of despair or darkness but help came to late. Because of all the quietness and the darkness, they lost track of themselves. Thats what it basically means to me but I could be entirely wrong about the true purpose behind it.

Dear Mrs. Carlson
ReplyDeleteThis poem made me feel sad and made me think that the author wanted to give up on life. I think that the title of "Lost Generation " means that the generation was lost and you must start over. The poet made me reflect on their writing because since she is our age he is talking more about our generation and what direction we are heading.

Dear Ms Carlson, reading this poem made me feel sad. Who ever wrote this poem must be very depressed, or going through some tough things. It makes me want to reach out and try to give him or her some kind of words of wisdom, to help them not be so sad. This poet wrote things like "And we fall apart" and "Oh why are we lost in these tears". This explains the kind of feelings this person is going through. We all feel this way also, at least once or twice in our lives, we cal all relate to this feeling. It's really something i would not want to back to. i enjoyed reading this poem, with all the different sayings, feelings, and the way the poet put it all together and explained, but i don't enjoy reading depressing things.
ReplyDeleteSincerely, Adarah Fujita Pd.2
Dear Ms. Carlson,
ReplyDeleteThis poem immediately gave me the impression of a "fall out" in a relationship. Every line seems to be pointing to this feeling using different similes and personified actions. The line of "the potter was too late" seems to be that their relationship was beginning to form, but was neglected and is now irreparable. The title of "The Lost Generation" would seem to point to an incomplete relationship, which would obviously not result in a new generation =P.
Khylani, P.2
Dear Kehau, i agree when you stated that this person is being just a little over dramatic. But it was still a good poem, very enjoyable, and different to read.
ReplyDeleteSincerely, Adarah Fujita Pd.2
Dear Jaxey,

Dear Ms. Carlson,
ReplyDeleteWhen i read this poem it made me feel kind of sad. I felt kind of depressed and like all the happiness escaped from my body. This teenage writer must be really depressed over something. But i did really enjoy reading this poem because it relates what everyone goes through when they're feeling sad. Eventually someone will save us from this dark time and brighten our day.
Sincerely,
Traclyn Akiona
Dear Ms. Carlson,
ReplyDeleteThe way the poem made me feel was a bit depressed. It made me realize what darkness for other people can feel like, which isn't a good feeling. I think the logic behind "potter was late" is that whatever happened could have been prevented but once it started it couldn't be stopped. This being a teen writer I felt like I could connect better with them. I felt like I wans't the only one sometimes feeling so dark.
Sincerly,
Kara Higa PD. 5
Dear Ms. Carlson,
ReplyDeleteWhile reading this poem, it made me absolutely heartbroken! It was very touching, but yet, very sad! The writer uses words like unnoitcing, forgetten, cry, darkness, desperately bleeding etc. The logic i see is that Potter who actually wasnt afraid to speak the truth maybe his meesage was too late and he couldnt get through to anyone at that time. The title "The Lost Generation" trys to make a connection to the poem because its about how our generation is corrupted; lies, stealing, and cheating. Everything teenagers experience, either first hand or they witness it. Now knowing the poet is from my generation, it does give me a more so reason to reflect upon it because I feel that i can relate to it more, and I'm not the only one that is going through that kind of stuff.
sincerely,
Penny Keough pd5
Dear Ms. Carlson,
ReplyDeleteWhen reading the poem I actually felt as if I was living it. I had the feeling of loneliness while reading as well. the words that triggered this feeling were, darkness, silence, desperately bleeding.
The logic I see is that the potter kept his feelings bottled up inside of him and because of that those feelings could have taken over. and made him feel the way he does. an it was to late because maybe at the time he couldn't get help and comfort from anyone.
The title connects us by being lost to the truth. because our generation is alot about lies, and stealing etc...
Knowing the poet is from our generation makes me feel that I can relate to it more, knowing I'm finally not the only one who feels that way.

ReplyDeleteDear Ms. Carlson,
ReplyDeleteWhen I read this poem, I felt a sense of understanding of what the poet wrote. It made a connection to what I would sometimes feel when I feel lonely and that there is no one to understand me at all. And the words that made me feel that was "forgotten how to cry" and "silence overwhelms our hearts". With those words, it made me feel the loneliness that usually don't come to me.
As for the "potter," I think that the person who is the potter was to late to save someone because of the overwhelming emotions that the person felt. The person may have committed suicide because of those dark emotions that was bottled up for so long. And when the "potter" had found him/her, it was too late to save them as they were already gone from this world. And the connection the poet might have been trying to make with the title, "The Lost Generation" was that there are many people who have lost themselves to the darker emotions that are dwelling in their hearts and were so lost in that darkness that they became "lost" and never to be found. What I mean to say is that like how I explained with the "potter," when people commit suicide, we lose that person and the generation that they could've had.
Now that I know that the person who wrote this poem is also a teenager like myself, I find that reflecting on her poem makes me think about my own writing. Though I prefer to write stories that are more of an emotional feeling as some of my friends have read, reading this poem helps me to understand that though I am a novice writer, I can write something good as well. Though, I have no feelings of wanting to reflect on my poem. The reason being is that like I had said earlier, I am still a novice and have much to improve on and the only way to do that is by writing more.
Ethos to me means the character of a person that appeals to another. Logos is the logic/opinion one gets from another. And pathos is the emotion one gets from something. At least that's what those words mean to me.
Sincerely,
Jessica "Sora" Pasadava

Dear Ms. Carlson,
ReplyDeleteThis Poem made me think a lot about the way things happen in life and love. It made me feel a little bit sad, because it reminded me of sad times in my life. But at the same time it was bitter sweet. When the author said "if we’ve forgotten how to cry?
If absence makes the heart grow fonder
can we hold on much longer?" these words brought along those strong feelings.
I think that when the author says "the potter is too late" she is kind of saying we missed the old generation. Things are no longer hand crafted and simple, everything now is all technical and difficult.
After knowing that the poem is by a teen writer, I feel that I can reflect more on the poem. I feel this way because I can apply some of the things she is using in her words in my life.
Sincerely,
Evangeline
Dear Kara,
ReplyDeleteI also agree with you! the poem is very depressing and i never knew how dark people might feel! I never thought of it that way about the connection; if he the potter could have prevented it! And yes, now knowing the poet is from our generation it really helps us connect on another level!

Dear Evangeline,
ReplyDeleteWOW! I never looked at it that way! All i thought of was depression and not things in life and love, nor bitter sweet! I felt the connection meant that it was too late and couldnt be there in time. But afte rhearing your perception of it, it makes me wonder and fully understand it in a whole other way! It is so TRUE, hardly anything is natural and handcrafted, now thsi generation is difficult and complex! And yes, knowing the poet is from our generation we can apply things into our own life!

Dear Erika,
ReplyDeleteI feel where you are coming from when you say you felt as if you were living it.I never thought of it this way but yes, the potter could have been holding inside his feelings until they took over. Sometimes that happens to me as well as it seems to happen in your life. I also agree that this generation is a little more prude then others. More about negative things. I feel that we should focus more on the positive things in life.
Sincerely,
Evangeline.
Dear Ms. Carlson,
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this poem, I felt a feeling of emptiness, loneliness, and solitude.... The introduction, "Oh why have we settled in the unquiet darkness, where the noise of the silence overwhelms our hearts?", really grabbed my attention and brought up those feelings. When the poet says "The potter is too late" she's saying that what's already been done can't be changed. The title "The Lost Generation" connects to the people that have settled in the darkness searching for a light to guide them, but instead found nothing and remained lost within the dark. The poet has given me more of a motivation to express strong feelings through poetic writing.

ReplyDeleteAlthough I don't quite understand what the poet is saying, when I read this poem i felt depressed. When the author said "We are burning in a drought of faith" and "we are just uselessly drowning" made me feel most depressed. When the poet titled this poem The Lost Generation, I think the point she was trying to get across is that this generation is not speaking up and standing up for what we believe in. Since the author is a teen writer, there is more of a reason to reflect on this poem. It means more coming from a person that's actually a part of our generation than to hear some grumpy 50year old dude just complain about the youth.

Dear Ms. Carlson,
ReplyDeleteWhen I read this poem it brought to my mind the word loneliness. I felt the feeling of carrying all the burdens of life by myself. Living my life with nobody on my side. The words that made me feel this way was "darkness" and "not being able to see good." Not being capable to do things that others could. I think it means like the hero or the speaker the one who will show us there is more to darkness and bad things, but that person is too late. I think "The Lost Generation" is being used as the connection that the generation is lost and has to start seeing the good and not living in darkness. Yes now that I know the writer is from my generation it gives me more reason to reflect on it because the writer is talking about us and how we are or are going to be. Logos is the idea or message, Pathos is the force or emotion, and Ethos is the form or manner. It was a very emotional poem but it brought many thoughts to my head. Sincerely, Alexa Thompson Pd.5

ReplyDeletewhen i read this poem i felt very depressed because of the way he was expressing how he feels. when he wrote the phrase "why are we drowning in these tears if we've forgotten how to cry?" it made me feel like he has cried so much that he has forgotten how to cry. it's like he has been in the same depressing situation for so long. when he mentioned a hro named potter, it made me think of harry potter. i lthink he made this connection between his like and harry potter. knowing that he is a teenager lets me relate to him a lot more because he could be going thorugh a first love kind of relationship where things can get confusing and depressing.
sincerely, sara agoot pd.4
Dear Ms. Carlson,
ReplyDeleteIn this poem, "The Lost Generation", by Kiersten W, was very depressing and confusing. In this poem I feel as if the author thinks that The Generation has no hope in life. When it says, Oh why are we lost in these tears if we’ve forgotten how to cry? It's explaining that they cried so much, that they forgot how to cry. She makes me feel like we have no hope and we are drowning under the weight. The connection the title has with the line the potter is to late...we are a lost generation and I feel as she thinks we have no hope whatsoever. I don't think the poet wants us to reflect her poem unless they feel the same way.
Sincerely, Jordan Vernola.

Dear Ms. Carlson.
ReplyDeleteI think these words mean:
Ethos- The regular person
Pathos- The heart felt person
Logos-the Thinker.

Dear Kehau,
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean when you say the author is lonely or has no hope. It's really sad, and she expects her readers to feel the same pain.

Dear Lawson,
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean when you say the poem makes you feel lonely. She makes us feel like we are stuck in the darkness and we can never see the light because we are a Lost Generation.
Sincerely, Jordan Vernola

Dear Ms Carlson
ReplyDeleteI felt that the authoris a sad person because she made me sad by just reading her poem on how she hates the world now.
the reasoning for "the potter is too late" was to show that it is too late to look back and try to fix the past and not letting go of the past.
It does not give me more to reflect on their writing because i do not share the same feelings of the poem as the author would .

Dear Ms. Carlson,
ReplyDeleteIn reading this poem, two words come to mind...emptiness and hopelessness. the author used words like "desperately" and "ironically hopeless" which gave me a feeling of loss, being helpless, as if i can do nothing. When she speaks of "the potter being late", i think she is talking about our generation as potters, and in our art we create, are stuck in a mold. we are too late when it has dried and has become something we do not want it to be. She named her poem "The Lost Generation", and throughout the poem this theme was very clear, that we are "lost" in a way, because we are merely going through life with no real direction. I think that since the author is from our generation the feelings she describes are very real and relevant to us as a generation, more so than the writings of an older person.
Sincerely,

these three words are rhetorical devices used in persuasion.
Logos=word (LOGIC)
In writing, you must have a certain logic to what you are saying.
Pathos=character (CREDIBILITY)
pathos refers to the author's credibility or how much you relate to them because of who they are, or their character. in this example, it's easier for us to relate to the poem because we can relate to the author's character.
Ethos=experience/ suffering (EMOTION)
the ethos in persuasion focuses on the emotion in the writng. this poem used many descriptive words to spark the emotion in the reader to further persuade and challenge whoever reads it.
I feel kind of sad reading the poem because of the blood thing. I'm not sure if there is logic behind the potter being late. I don't know the poem seemed kind of dark and I'm not a huge fan of dark.
ReplyDeleteDear Ms. Carlson,
ReplyDeleteAfter I got done reading this poem I felt sad, confused, lonely and confused. I fell like I can relate when they say oh why have we settled in the unquiet darkness, where the noise of the silence overwhelms our heart? sometimes I feel like I can't talk to people about things so I end up juat keeping it to my selg all the time and after awhile of me keeping it to my self it does become silent and it can be way to overwhelming. I think "The lost Generation" is being used as a connection that the generation is lost, but it needs to start seeing the good things abd all the postive things instead of living in the darkness. Now that I know the writer is from our generation it's more easy to relate to but I think it's to dramatized.
Sincerely,
Megan Alexson
